http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.350414 (Newegg won't add combos to wishlists)

Pretty decent little build, New 32nm i3, USB 3.0, a SATA 6.0GB/s HDD (although the mobo doesn't support 6.0GB/s mode), DX11 GPU, etc. I didn't put a disk drive in, but any SATA DVD Burner would do. They are around $30. Blu Ray Drives are a around $70.

It would be pretty easy to trim off some slack and get the price down to around $650-700. I might do just that to amuse myself. I haven't put together a Newegg build in ages.

Oh and your buddy might also want a quad core CPU, that i3 is only a dual core. Dual core is plenty as far as I'm concerned, but some people do more CPU-intensive stuff. Gaming is not terribly CPU intensive.

EDIT- Just found cheaper HDD and downgraded the mobo and cpu. Almost hit $650. After all, you don't need USB 3.0 and a 6.0GB/s drive without a 6.0GB/s mobo is worthless. But you still get a nice and efficient CPU and a newer GPU.

1. Tell him to go ATI/AMD. Don't know if he's an idiot fanboy but they just offer great performance for the money currently. As much as I like my Q9550 and my GTX "280/285", ATI/AMD is just the way to go right now. You could try waiting and see if Fermi (the next generation of the GeForce's) is as good as people say it is.

2. Sound cards are pretty much obsolete unless you work specifically in audio works. A good headset will provide sufficient quality for anybody, not to mention also providing a mic.

3. Tell him to look for the MX518 in other sites first. I bought mine for ~$25 on sale at Buy.com.

4. That RAM is good but I'd go for DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500).

5. No motherboard?

Actually Intel/ATi is the combo that's best right now. Here's the SA rig thread with some quick pick parts in the second or third post. If they are blocking non-registered people right now, let me know and I'll quote it for you.

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showth ... id=3241890

Hell, I'll quote the quick pick section for you anyway.

Here are a list of parts that are generally agreed-upon to be good, solid choices for anyone assembling a new machine.
THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST, NOR IS IT MEANT TO BE.
Everyone's needs in a computer are different. This part should be a starting point in your research, not a definitive guide to what you should get. Changes, corrections, additions, and comments are always welcome.

Intel CPU
  • Intel i5 750 The current best price/performance ratio chip available.

AMD CPU

HTPC CPU

Intel Motherboard
NOTE: Gigabyte P55 boards are picky about memory, check the RAM section below. There have also been some infrequent reports that the ATI 5XXX series do not work/play well with the Gigabyte boards. If you're concerned we recommend the MSI board.

AMD Motherboard

HTPC Motherboard
Note: All listed boards have onboard video that supports HD video decoding
  • GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H ATI mATX AMD board
  • Zotac H55ITX Intel i3 mini-ATX board that supports the integrated GPU on the dual core i3/i5 series
  • Gigabyte H55-S2H Intel mATX i3/5 board that supports the integrated GPU on the dual core i3/i5 series

Memory

Graphics
    1600x1050 and below:
  • Radeon 4770 - A slightly less hot and less powerful 4850 that can easily overclock to 4850 levels.
  • Radeon 4850- Our typical recommendation at this resolution.
  • Radeon 5750 - Slightly faster than the 4850 and less power-hungry/heat producing. Worthwhile at $150 if other choices aren't available.

    1900x1200 and below
  • Radeon 5770 - Our minimum recommendation for this resolution.
  • Radeon 5830 - Decent but overpriced compromise between the 5770/5850
  • Radeon 5850 - The most powerful card worth buying without going into serious overkill territory.

Hard Drive
Solid State Drives (Note: Zipzoomfly links, Newegg overcharges on SSDs)

Optical
Case
HTPC Case
Note: There are a ton of variables when picking an HTPC case, depending on user preference. This list is in no way close to comprehensive.

Power Supplies

Aftermarket Cooling
LGA775/AM2/3 (Core 2 and AMD chips):

LGA1156 (i5/i7):
TV Tuners

Operating Sytem
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM Edition

HTPC Prebuilt
  • Dell Zino
  • Acer Revo Note: Comes with XP Home, needs Win Vista/7 installed to support HD decoding

LCDs
In general, most LCDs will be fine for the average user, and price is the biggest driver. However, you can also check the 2nd post of the Anandtech LCD thread, which lists nearly every "picky bastard" choice in the 20-24+ range.

The current Intel Price/Performance "Sweet Spot":
Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2
Intel i5 750

Don't let him get an nVidia graphics card. That 9800GTX+ is ages old. All nVidia stuff is old right now, and I doubt Fermi will be ground-breaking. Whenever Fermi comes out, it will be at the high end. I would expect a full year from now until we have a $200 fermi part.

For a gaming rig, I would still suggest an i3. Cheap, cool, and fast enough for games and general use.

I wouldn't get a Coolermaster PSU, that Sonata III is pretty hard to beat.

Well you could, but it would hhave to be really old sli or crossfire. you would be better off spending the money you would put down on 2 old graphics cards and get a new one, which would most certainly offer better performance by itself than the 2 old ones combined.

SLI/CF are only worthwhile at the very high end when you can't get any better performance with a single video card.

Otherwise, you are usually better off getting a single graphics card.

That's actually an incredible combo. Most Newegg combos that I see kinda suck.

Although I'd combine the case and PSU (Sonata III...) and get a cheaper CPU. I think they put the 661 on there assuming you'd use the integrated graphics.

You could also get a cheaper HDD and a cheaper H55 mobo to save a little more money. I'm sure that RAM isn't the cheapest DDR3 out there either.

With the extra cash you could get a slightly better graphics card.

Still a nice, rounded combo.

*takes a bow*

If you think you can find parts that are as good, for cheaper, go for it. But remember that for this combo theres a $70 off combo discount. So if you can shave off >$70, then the parts you find would be worth it.

Oh, I think I could make a better gaming build with very similar parts. That thing has a 4670 for god's sake. Try a 5850, kthxbai.
